Crazy socks

Ok, well they don’t have to actually be socks. Just be crazy.

The other day my co-worker was talking to me about their trip to my hometown, San Francisco. It was inspiring to hear their view on what seemed to me to be so normal: people wearing crazy socks. This reiterated the idea of everything we, as creative agencies, live for: learning, understanding and adapting to the different. As a creative, I interpreted wearing crazy socks down the street to simply exist without fear.

In the ever-changing industry that we operate in, creativity needs constant fostering. Brands are doing amazing things left and right; agencies are pushing their limits on a daily basis. It only makes sense for the creatives in agencies to continue to grow and progress at the same rate.

The worst feeling for a creative is to feel burnt out – imagine a fisherman losing his boat, a biker being told they can never bike again, or a farmer losing their farm. This is what happens when a creative person, ceases to find inspiration. Inspiration fuels creativity.

“Creativity means creating change in the world around you” – The Kelley Brothers

The Kelly Brothers nailed what being creative means in one sentence, and so do those people in San Francisco, wearing those crazy socks. You cannot find creativity at your nearest grocery store for 50% off, to buy and keep in your fridge to eventually expire, and creativity is not something you can pick up off the ground. Creativity is something to be experienced. As a team member in a Yorkshire Marketing agency, here a few tips I would like to share in order to stay creative:

  1. NEVER believe any idea isn’t worth giving.
  2. Listen to mind stimulating music in the office space!
  3. Make your office space reflects you and your creativity. Don’t be afraid to bring in something to make it your own.
  4. Stick an inspiring quote on your computer, or somewhere on your desk so you can see it every day while working.
  5. Book a vacation. Travel is the best form of inspiration and learning what creativity means to different people around the world.
  6. Don’t forget to laugh.

So, what are you waiting for? Do your morning dance around the kitchen, sing your heart out in the car on your way to work, and do me favour, put on those crazy socks. Simply existing without fear.
